Single, Double or Triple Wall Boxes: Which Do You Need?
Not all cardboard boxes are equal. The number of “walls” of corrugated board decides how much weight and rough handling a box can take. Choose wrong and you either crush your product or overpay for boxes. Here’s how to pick.
What “Wall” Means
Corrugated board is a wavy fluted layer glued between flat liners. Add more layers and you get more walls — and more strength.
Single Wall Boxes
- One layer of fluting between two liners.
- Best for: most everyday products — apparel, small electronics, books, cosmetics.
- The workhorse of e-commerce shipping.
Double Wall Boxes
- Two layers of fluting for extra strength.
- Best for: heavier or fragile items, and boxes that will be stacked.
- Good for glassware, appliances, and bulk shipments.
Triple Wall Boxes
- Three layers — extremely strong, almost like light wood.
- Best for: very heavy, industrial, or export goods.
- Machinery parts, large appliances, long-haul freight.
Quick Guide by Weight
- Up to ~15–20 kg / everyday items → single wall.
- Heavier, fragile, or stacked → double wall.
- Very heavy / industrial / export → triple wall.
Don’t Over-Spec Either
A triple-wall box for a T-shirt just wastes money and adds weight. Match the wall to the job — strong enough to protect, no heavier than needed.
